General Freight Business (GFB) transport is dominated by road, with:

  • 99.1% market share on the N1 corridor
  • 99.7% market share on the N2 corridor
  • 86.6% market share on the N7 corridor

In 2022, the main road freight transport cost drivers were fuel (R33.3 billion; 44.2% of total cost), maintenance and repairs (R10.3 billion), and driver wages (R6.9 billion).
